I’ve recently had some requests to make more of these Grateful Dead mugs. I’ve been playing around some with the image and the size of the image on the mug. Here’s the latest:
When carving these I think about some Beech trees on a trail nearby that people have carved into. Those trees have thin smooth bark on them that makes it easier to carve into. The carving on these mugs have a similar look as the carvings on those trees.

Here’s a couple of new glazes that I’ve been experimenting with. They’re actually combinations of overlapping glazes. Overlapping glazes can give some very unexpected results and they usually give the piece more interest. It is riskier to do this especially if you’re not familiar with the glazes you’re using but it makes things exciting when opening the kiln.
This striped pot came about from someone asking me to make a mug with a Grateful Dead symbol (scroll down a little to see it). On the backside of that mug I did some stripes and it turned out nicely. I’ve done stripes before but I did these a little different and they turned out better than any in the past. Anyway, I like how when doing something that I normally wouldn’t do can give ideas for future pots.

Here’s a few pics of some pots from our Holiday Pottery Sale 2013. I moved some of our furniture out of our backroom and set up long tables. There were over a hundred pots in that room and over a hundred in my showroom which is a separate building next to our house.
Thank you to all those who braved the cold rainy day and came out. It’s always great seeing new and repeat customers and friends.
Someone asked me to make a Steal Your Face mug back during the summer. I thought about it for awhile because I wasn’t sure how to get the small details and to have something that I would like. After some tests I was able to combine several techniques that I’ve used in the past to get it to work. I also thought the backside turned out nice.
